I have a 2000 Ford Contour that had the check engine light come on last week.It has 124K miles and it is a 2.0 4cyl DOHC. I was driving home doing 70mph and all of a sudden the car dropped to about 60mph while my foot was still on the gas. Since then when ever I put a load on the engine it will surge and not accelerate until I back off of the throttle a little bit. I took it to the auto parts store to have them scan the codes and all they could tell me was that it was missfiring.

I have changed the Plugs, Wires, O2 Sensor, and fuel filter and still no fix. Today I got into the car and it wouldn't start. It will turn over fine but just doesn't seem like it wants to fire up unless I give it some gas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It ended up being a broken timing belt. I couldn't see it from the top because it was broke on the bottom end. The only reason I figured that out was because none of the pulleys were moving when the engine cranked over.
