1998 Ford Contour

i have a problem with my 1998 ford contour.1st. ithought it was the fuel pump so i changed pump and filter but no good it sounded like the timing belt and i just replaced that but still won't start and sounds the same.can anyone help back ground car just died one day it lost all power and then wouldn't restartso i/m at a loss as what to do next.it's getting gas and has spark
could i have screwed up putting in timing belt if so how do i get the timing set without tearing down the engine again thanks
