when i step on the gas the car starts to sputter and acts as if its going to cut off;what could possibly be the problem?

First thing you need to do is have the codes read, Autozone does it free, Post the results with the code number(s). Even if the service engine light is not on, there should be freeze frame data stored.
This could be any number of concerns, the first and most basic is when was your last complete tune up? I am talking wires, plugs, PCV all filters? If no codes are present start with the basic stuff, just like the 50's! Let me know where you stand with it after the tune up...Also if the new fuel filter doesn't help, check the fuel pressure...
