Hi
I was driving a 92 Ford Aerostar and the following happened:
I was shifting from PARK into Drive and I head, like a snapping sound or something. Now it did go into drive, and did manage to go into reverse, then back to drive. So I went home, shut it off in neutral. I couldn't get it into park. It won't start now because I am not in park, I'm not even sure if I am in neutral. The shifter just slides around up and down Should this scare me as much as it does? How much to remedy the problem? One person said control arm another said it might be "linkage?" Please forward any advice you can give me, I would appreciate it.

Hi Nathan.

Sounds like a shifting linkage problem to me. - It's the assembly that "links" your shifter to the transmission and it can get caught or break.

Hi,
I have had a similar issue with my '95 Aerostar. About every 6 to 8 months the Shift Arm would start to get loose. In the beginning, I found a screw on the floor board. Looking under the dash on the steering column, I found where the screw had come from. There are two of these screws that when screwed in tightly, make the shift lever tight like it should be.
Now, with a flash light or other source, with the key on but engine NOT running, Look under the dash at the steering column. At the same time, move the shift lever slowly and notice its movement under there. Chances are that one or both of the screws are loose or missing.
Tighten these up. If one is missing, look around on the floor board or on the ground where you got in and out on the van.
Hope this helps, Brad.
