Engine misfire

I was having a cylinder misfire and are being told that I need a new engine or an overhaul due to low compression. Is this true and what is the average price? As I have been told $3,000.00.

Before commenting any further I would like to know what the compression readings are and I would like the readings done wet and dry, if your mechanic dose not under stand that, I would be looking for a mechanic that does as this is important in determining the cause of any low compression problem.
