There is a loud grinding noise coming from the left front axle area. So we have come to believe that it is the CV shaft, so we want to be able to go about removing and replacing that on our own. But how do you go about doing that for this specific vehicle? What materials do you need, step by step instructions (the repair person does have some experience!)

Usually a grinding noise indicates Bearings a Clicking Noise ussually indicate CV Axle.

You may want to jack up the car and pull the wheel off. To check the axle try moving it up and down at the joints and turning the axle if there it a lot of play or it feels loose then it could be the axle. If all feels pretty tight then block back wheels put car in neutral and spin the brake rotor. Also lift up on or move the brake rotor side to side and see if there is excesive play. You may need to take the brake caliper off to get a good feel.
