the truck shut down alst night and would not start. It tried to turn over but did not. I put some gas straight into the carburator and it started then shut off. Could it be the fuel pump?

If you put fuel into the throat of the throttle body and it starts and stalls, yes its not getting any fuel, but whether or not the pump is bad I am nnot sure, it uses a relay and fuse, because its an electric in-tank fuel pump. If its a 98, with high mileage and you have power to the pump in the crank position of the ignition key, change the fuel pump and use a new filter, if the filter gets clogged it will also cause the same symptoms, you must listen to hear the pump hum when you turn the key on.
