At the age of the van, has your timming chain ever been replaced? Do a quick compression test, if you don't have a tester, pull a plug I do #1, put your finger over the plug hole, not in it, over it and crank, should be sufficient pressure to blow air forcefully past your finger...Make sure timming in cap matches #1 cyl!

It's remotely posible but the converter would have had to seal the exhuast...get a rubber mallett and bang on the converter, hear any rattles? I still thing you need a compression test. The other thing is maybe the plug wires were crossed up? Possibly the distributor shaft is worn, check the sideplay, any movement side to side?
