I have a 99 Neon that had the timing belt break. The mechanic says I may have engine damage to the valves since it's a Zero Tolerance Motor.

What's the first step to find out?

Hello -

You may be able to tell a little by a compression check though that really isn't the sure way as the compression may be bad due to say, bad rings.

The best way is to remove the heads to see the valves. The good thing here though is do a valve job just like you had blown a head gasket..... New valve seals, resurface the heads, the valves will be inspected and the bad ones replaced.

Yes more money but it is apart....... And with 165K on the engine this is a great time to do it.
