My Neon has been running relatively fine lately. Today I tried to start it, and it would start, but then die immediately. This happened 3 times, and then it wouldn't catch at all. It definitely wasn't a dead battery because the lights were working and the engine was trying. I tried to give it some gas as I turned the key, but nothing happened when I pushed the pedal.
Oddly enough, I came back to it a couple of hours later and it started without issue. I am 10 hours away from home (the Neon made that trip the day before this happened) and am a little unsure of whether it's ok to make the trip back in it.

There can be a few issues of why this happened. Depending on the climate your in if it was hot it could have simply been vapor lock caused by the heat. Once the car cooled off when you came back the lock was gone and it ran fine again. It could have been bad fuel from the gas station also. You can add a water remover like a product called heet. It goes in the fuel tank and removes the water. If there hasnt been an issue with the neon before the bad fuel would have settled down and the water went to the bottom allowing good fuel back to the engine letting it restart. There can be other issues as well like a bad fuel filter or faulty fuel pump. You can take the car to a mechanic to have a fuel pressure test done to rule out any fuel pump issues. The manufactuere does not recommend periodic fuel filter replacement on 1996 and newer neons but it would be a cheaper attempt at fixing the problem. Please let a proffesional do the filter change due to the fuel pressure in the line if you are not experienced with changing one. Hope this helps. Morticar
