Engine problem
2002 Dodge Intrepid Engine Size unknown Two Wheel Drive 140000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
I was driving to work one day and when I stopped at a red light my car died and the oil light came on. Car would not crank afterwards. Kept trying and eventually i got it to start. As long as I kept my foot on the gas it would keep running and the oil light would go off. Got to work and engine was smoking and checked the oil, was fine. After work i took it and got the oil changed. Car ran fine for about 10 minutes and again when i stopped at a stop light it died. Same problem. After i got it to crank it would keep running while foot was on the gas. Made it home and engine was smoking again. Also heard tapping about 2 minutes before arriving at home. After the car cools it runs fine for about 10 minutes and then the same thing happens. Someone suggested the catalytic converter might be clogged.

Could be the catalytic converter-to nail it get an exhaust backpressure check, anything over 3psi is no good.

Also have the idle air control valve/speed motor/throttle position sensor/EGR valve checked too.
