A bad wheel bearing would make a "whirring" noise like an airplane ready for take off. And you'd feel a very slight wobbly sensation in the steering wheel, mostly while turning.

A bad strut will cause the car to either bounce up and down excessively when hitting bumps in the road, or will give you a very harsh ride. Sometimes they'll make noise (squeaking/grinding) when going over bumps.
