My 1998 Dodge Dakota sport is backfiring pretty bad in the morning now that it is getting cold and the engine does not seem to wanna get warmed up. What could be causing this problem?

Hi:
Can you tell if it's backfireing through the intake or exhaust? Also, check for any vacuum leaks. Many times that will cause a backfire.

As far as the engine not warming up, relace the thermostat. That should take care of the problem.

It sounds like it is backfiring through the exhaust system. Could it be a cam sensor? If so, where is it located.

Hi:
Please look for a vacuum leak first. Yes the cam sensor could cause a backfire, but many other things could too. It's very common for a vacuum leak to cause this problem.
