When I shift the truck into gear on the column it kicks in hard. It also slips slightly going into 2nd and 3rd. I was going to try a new filter and some new atf 4. Do you think that might help? What do you think the problem is?

You could try the service, but chances are it won't change anything. Actually, it sounds like it is time for a general rebuild. The hard shift is most likely coming from the valve body. What concerns me the most is the slipping. If the trans slips, the clutch plates are most likely bad. I have one last question. Has the check engine light ever come on? The reason I ask is because there are sensors for the trans that can go bad and set the light.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Yes the check engine light has come on. My father mentioned some sort of module, possibly external that could be causing an issue. Do you know anything about that? And what sensors may be causing this? Thanks.
