Dodge Grand Caravan 1999 159000 miles 3.3L
I was driving with the van on cruise control when the cruise kicked off and the speedometer went crazy going up and down radically. It wont shift past 3rd and if you try to automaticallt shift it starting in first it gets stuck there and wont shift. Any ideas?

To start I would have it scanned to see if the PCM picked up any codes. Could be as simple as the VSS (vehicle Speed Sensor). But scanning it will help point us in the right direction

We scanned the vehicle and the codes said:
gear 1 ratio incorrect & transmission control system malfunction. So I don't really understans how the gear ratio could be wrong unless the control system malfunction has something to do with it.

When a Chrysler electronic transmission/transaxle throws an incorrect ratio code it is usually caused by bad speed sensors as noted by Jack or it is slipping due to wrong/old/low fluid, plugged filter, or worn out clutch packs.
