In the morning when I first start out there is a growling noise in what I think is the power steering or front end. After turning the wheel a few times left and right or going forward for about 100 feet the noise ceases. Also, at some times when the brakes are applied and the car is near stopping there is a crunching sound from the front end...sounds like metal on metal? Have had brakes checked and front end checked by Les Swab people and they find no problem. There are no leaks and the car steers and runs fine.

I hope to see an answer to your question. I must say that my 2003 Caravan with 84000 miles is having the same problem. Almost identical to what you have described. I'm thinking power steering pump, but would love to see other responses. My sound when starting is more of a whine that I have always associated with low power steering fluid.
