I decided to take off the valve covers and found to have many push rods bent

Your welcome, it's happened to the best. I did a timing chain on a van(318) took me around 7 hours, only to find a dead cylinder, took the head off, to find a hole in the piston, now a short block, after all that work, it happens to everyone at least once, and it's the only way to gain experience. If you have to walk away from it. Come back when your in a better frame of mind, the hour comes when it;s running, and behind you. Good luck.
