For years my tach, speedo, and fuel gauge would intermittantly go on an off. Now they are always off. When the gauges are out, the transmission feels sluggish (almost tight) and when I come to a stop the transmission surges or thumps. It feels like I've been hit from behind.

If your odometer works turn the key from off to on three times on the last time leave it on, codes will display on the odometer. If it's out, have the codes read with a scanner. Autozone will scan for free.
Post results here. Sounds like the cluster is no good.

No odometer, and when it was intermittant, it did not record miles when gauges were out.

You will have to have it scanned by a shop that can scan "B" codes. Or dealer.
