I have a friend who said he had accelerated from a stop sign (approx 10mph) when his car stopped (timing belt broke). I replaced the belt and water pump (aligned the crank and cams to their proper markings) replace everything (belts, mounts etc), but now the car won't start at all. I readjusted the belt 3 or 4 times to no avail. It gets fire as well as fuel and the engine turns over and over with an occasional putter but won't start. I thought if the timing was still off slightly it'll still start but run roughly, but after adjusting the timing three times I should've by now got it toat least start. This is an interference engine, but he said he didn't hear any noises when the belt broke. Do you have any suggestions? Can a bent valve or more occur at low speeds and such as 10 mph. Also can bent valves cause a car not to start.

Well if the timing belt is on correctly and everything is in time then I would do a compression test to see if any valve got bent as I suspect some have. Let me know what you find.
