Car won't start. Parked it on an incline, back side down. Wouldn't start after about an hour. Put it in neutral, wouldn't start. Rolled it to level position. Removed the shifter knob, ran it through the gears and it started. Was able to start it about 4-5 more times, and now won't start again.

The interlock appears to be loose. The cable connection to the interlock also appears loose. The pin on the shifter connecting to the interlock was bent, and ultimately broke off.

Additional info:

All fuses are intact. I hear a low humming noise for about a second, then it stops when I turn the key to the on position. There are no sounds, no clicking, nothing at all when turning the key to the start position. The shifter is in Park or Neutral. When I move the shifter through the different gears, the correct gear is displayed on the dash.

I can now move the smaller cable. Seems to go up into the dash somewhere because there is some sound in the dash when I move that cable.

More Info:

We ruled out the neutral lockout switch (rear backup lights came on when shifter in reverse). Took battery out of car and tested OK after a 2-hour charging. Removed and tested starter - which tested OK. Reinstalled starter and battery. Battery was showing "replace battery" when testing at the terminal posts under the hood.

Tested cables between battery and under hood posts. Negative cable was testing intermittently open. Replaced that cable.

Car now starts. Will report again after another four weeks.
