2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Malfunction Indicator Light

Recently this light (malfunction indicator) came on in my PT. It is not flashing. My gas cap appears to be fine. What do you think this is coming on for? I have driven, perhaps 80 miles since this light first appeared. Is it safe to drive? Do I need to go to a mechanic immediately? What causes this to come on? You need to get the car scanned for codes
that will pin point the trouble area
and if you like to do it your self
you can get the codes by cycling the key on off three times ending with key on
in the odometer area read p0000 code s
