Check engine light came on and add it checked for problem code and it came up egr valve problem, unhooked the battery and the check engine light went off. Two weeks or so later its back on, unhooked battery again, its off again. What exactly is its function and how important or neccessary to deal with it is it? Will it cause more problems?

The EGR is an exhaust gas recirculator. It is an emissions component that takes unburned gases and reburns them in the engine. The light is reset when you disconnect the battery, but comes back on when the computer cycles to the EGR mode and identifies a problem. Check the EGR valve to see if there is a vacuum leak, or if the valve is sticking open or closed. Eventually, this will cause a driveability issue.
