I got a check engine light that came on whereas the mechanic told me that it is a problem with the catalyic converter. The light comes on periodically and therefore not constant.

He said however that he is going by the code that the computer is giving out. I had this checked out by another mechanic and he said the same thing.

I want to know if both can be wrong. They both told me that it would cost about $400.00 to fix it.

Hi HEIDELBERG,

Thank you for the donation.

What was the trouble code retrieved? We need to know the code to determine what is at fault.

Sure. Anyone can be wrong. A po420 is probably the code but a bad converter is not always the only answer.

Rapping on the bottom of the converter can sometimes show that the converter is broken internally.

The code is saying the the effieciency of the converter is not good. Now there are times that the converters precious metals can be contaminanted and a product called cataclean may revive the converter. There may be a air leak in the exhaust in fornt of the converter than may also cause this code.
