1989 Chrysler New Yorker 6 cyl

My car stalled this morning while driving. It has happen before about 2 or three times. not very often, maybe once a month.
the times before i would give it about 15 minutes and then it would start back up. this morning it didn't even after about 1 hour. a friend came by and looked at it, played around with the distributor cap and then later it started to work.
What would cause this?
