The car starts off in second gear and every now and then it will downshift into low and it wont shift out. When I start it up it is in second gear. Do you think I need to replace the transmission in this car? Or maybe replace the ECU? Before replacing the trans, I would recommend having the trans control module (TCM) tested by a certified trans tech. It can cause this type of problem and is much cheaper to replace than a transmision.

Let me know if the check engine light has come on.

Since the light is on, there should be a trouble code stored in the computer. It may identify where the problem is coming from. I would "guess" it is the TCM, but you need to have the computer scanned to determine if that is correct. Have it done. Most nationally recognized parts stores will do it for free, so there is no money out of pocket for you. LEt me know what code they find.

Hello Joe-

Well, I replaced the TCM and still have the same problem. Now that I think back, I believe the spedomoder and the transmission quit working properly at the same time. Are these two problems related?

Thanks!
