My power steering only works when I have a some acceleration. Very hard to steer from stopped or slow cornering. Belt may be loose. How do you tighten the belt?

Sounds like power steering is completely out. Steering is much easier with acceleration even without power steering so it would be hard to notice a loss of power steering while under acceleration. Inspect power steering fluid. Also inspect pump to ensure bearings are not worn out. If OK and belt is loose tighten with the tensioner bolt.

Try steering while stopped and in park. If there's no power assist, raise engine speed a little and you'll see the power assist come back. This is proof the pump needs to be replaced. It's a German-made "ZF" style pump with a remote-mounted reservoir. Common problem.
