I have a 2002 Chevrolet Venture with 115000 miles. I just recently took it to a repair shop due to the fact that all of the oil came pouring out from under the van. After leaving the van there for almost 7 hrs, I was told that I needed a whole new engine. Is it possible that it could be something else that is cheaper. What questions should I ask the mechanic?

You ask what happened and why they are recommending it.
The 3400 motors aren't the greatest as the have an intake manifold gasket problem that leaks causing a variety of problems, some simple some fatal.

Why did the oil come out? Did you drive it afterwards?

More info is needed.

If you do need one, I strongly recommend a Jasper Remanufactured engine. Good warranty, great product.

They said that there was a crack somewhere in the engine. There were two mechanics there who had two different answers. One talked about the crack the other stated that he couldn't really tell where it was from. I did drive the vehicle to the shop after I noticed the spill. It drove fine. The oil only comes out when you crank the car up. If the car is just sitting, it doesn't even leak much at all. It has a slight clicking noise, but that is it. If I do have to replace the engine, where would I get the one that was suggested. Thanks for the replies, they're helpful.

Sure wish there was more info on the crack.....

Jasper engines are at :

The crack "may" cause you a core charge. That may not be known until the old engine is sent back.

does yours have the towing package? if it does then you have some rubber hoses up by the oil filter the leak could be a ruptured hose . make sure one of these hoses is not torn. has anyone filled itb with il and let it run to see where it is leaking?
