1999 Chevy Venture no or minimal heat

There is no or minimal heat? Temp needle wants to travel up and down for no apparent reason, depending on speed or say at a stop sign, sometimes goes to overheat, but does not appear to overheat? Did replace rad. cap.

Did that already.
Sorry! I should have added that
with the cap replacement.
Looking at waterpump as my next
cheap fix, then I think I got a head
gasket problem, if that don't work?

One way to test for a bad water pump is to squeeze the upper radiator hose when the engine is hot and idling. Careful, because the hose will be HOT! If you do not feel much coolant circulating through the hose when you rev the engine, the pump may be bad. The other cause might be a bad thermostat that is not opening properly (remove and inspect the thermostat), or a clogged radiator.
