When I have my truck in park or neutral I can turn the rear driveline about 3/8" is this normal or could it be contributing to my clanging noise?

There should be some play. Disconnect the rear drive shaft from the rear differential yoke. Push the yoke up and down and left and right. There should be no movement. If there is then your rear differential pinion bearing is probably worn.
BE SURE TO PUT THE PARKING BRAKE ON.
