how can i tell when the catalytic convertor is bad?

The only way to truely tell is to have your converters air flow tested. This requires special equipment and a welder. Any exhaust mechanic should have the equipment to do this. Your Tahoe has two converters on it and they should be tested independently..

BTW - Federal Law states that a converter must be determined faulty BEFORE you can replace it...
