1997 Chevy Tahoe Will not shift from park to any gear

My chevy tahoe will not shift from park to any position or gear at times. It dont do it all the time just on occasion. I have to turn the key half way on and then it will shift into any position.

As a 1st step check brake light switch and its connector plug

Thanks. We had Uhaul install trailer brakes in our truck about a month ago. From the instructions on the brakes, it looks as if it is tied in to the same button as is mentioned in this thread. Maybe they messed something up when installing the unit. Thanks again for the help.

Check fuses
possible that the fuse couldn't handle the load
check for a cut wire also around the switch

turn key to position 1 shift to neutral start engine
(dont put it in park until u reached u r destination )
