my 96 tahoe has been ticking like a lifter was bad for years upon startup and would quickly go away then it just started stumbling one day all of a sudden terribly, knocking loudly and has no power. feels like I took 1 or 2 plug wires off. what common things should I check to solve this problem.

Does the engine knock sound like the bottom end? Is the miss constant like a plug wire was removed? Is the check engine light on? If you can, take a compression test, and let me know what you find.

it actually sounds more like a lifter. I guess a comp test would show that. it is consistent like a wire (or2) was removed. my buddy that builds hotrods pushed on the gas and brake together and said if it was rod it would get worse with the load on it but it didn't so he doesn't think bottom end but hard to tell. I'll comp test and report the findings and yes check engine light is on
