My truck ran out of gas and then the lights were left on until the battery died. Now I am told that I need a new fuel pump & sending unit for $700 plus labor. Is this common just because it ran out of gas? Is there any other possible fix? Someone said that I could put a can of Heet in the fuel tank and that might work. Have you heard of this fix?

In tank fuel pumps are cooled and lubricated by the fuel in the tank. When you run a car out of gas, it pumps a lot of air through the pump which overheats it and causes some severe wear and many times, failure when they cool off.
You will need to use a fuel pressure gauge to verify this
