When I press the brake, the ABS system in my pickup recently started kicking in when I am not sliding, on ice, or doing anything that should trigger it. It started a couple of weeks ago and would happen at random every couple of days. It has now started happening every day. It seems to occur at low speeds (less than 10 mph) and is random in frequency. When it does occur, I have tried getting it to stop by stepping hard on the brake pedal and this does work. Any suggestions as to what could be causing the ABS system to kick in and what needs to be checked and how would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If the ABS light is not illuminated that would indicate that the system is working properly. However.....if there is a gremlin lurking in the background, the ABS system will eventually detect codes when it fails a self test.

If you have access to a scan tool, I would like to know if the scan tool recognizes wheel speed at the front hubs. The electronics that calculates wheel speed information is sent throug the hub & bearing.

Or you can do it yourself... http://www.2carpros.com/articles/mitchell1eautorepair-car-repair-manuals
This just fixed one of the trucks we had in the shop with the same symptoms. We cleaned it up and it fixed it.
