I have a 1998 silverado that will start sometimes and sometimes it won't. Problem just started about a month ago. A year ago, I replaced dist. cap, rotor, plugs, ignition wires, fuel pump, fuel filter. I also replaced fuel pressure regulator about 5 months ago when truck was difficult to start solving that problem.
I took it to local garage (who is friend of mine) and he kept it for 5 days. Of course it started for him everyday he had it. We wrote it off as bad gas. 2 weeks later intermittent problem started again so I replaced the ignition coil. No change. It still start most of the time but when it won't start, you can crank it as long as you like and it will not start. Today, I installed ignition module. I thought about a pickup coil but the Haynes manual only explains how to install 88-95 models. It says nothing about 96-98. Can you tell me where pickup coil is located? Is there anything else to consider besides what has already been done?

I just had an 01 yukon come to the shop I work for, doing the same thing. finally the truck quit, I had also replaced the fuel regulator, all the plugs and wires. I worked for about a week or so before it started doing it again. Turns out the fuel pump was the culprit, which was replaced by another garage a few months earlier. Its possible that the fuel pump you bought was bad from the parts store. when it happens again check the fuel pressure and also check and see if you have fire to the distributor. as far as the pickup coil it should be in the distributor just like the 88-95 models. if you have anymore questions feel free to ask.
