What do I have to do to remove the rear axle. Do I have to go into the rear end to take it apart? Is there a retainer ring in there or some type of holding apparatus?

If you have never done this, and you happen to have a limited slip differential, you are probably in over your head. If you have a non ls rear end, yes, you need to remove the rear cover, remove the lock pin, push the axle in until the C clip fall out, then pull the axle. DO NOT turn the axles!
