Hello,

I recently bought a 1987 Chevy Silverado half-ton pickup truck, 305 engine. I don't know much about engines, that's the size I was told. It's a good truck, definitely a bit sluggish but still has juice in the accelerator. Today I was driving it down the highway, around 60 miles an hour, and it suddenly felt like it slipped out of gear or something--the accelerator no longer worked, and the service engine soon light popped on. I got it onto the shoulder, and shut the engine off. I waited a few minutes, then tried to start it. It wouldn't turn over the first couple of tries (it's never done that before), then when it did a big puff of black smoke came out of the tailpipe. I was able to drive it the 10 miles home, but it's parked now until I can get it fixed. Any thoughts on what the problem may be, and how expensive it could be?

Thanks,
Kelly
