I sometimes need to pump my brakes to to slow down or stop. I was told to drain my brakes. Is that correct? How do I do it and what parts may I need?

Bleed the brakes and see what happens could be air in it. Make sure you top it off.

You may have a leak somewhere causing this. If this has rear drum brakes they may need adjusted as they can also cause this. If all of this is ok, the master cylinder may be leaking internally causing pressure leaking past the seals.
