I have a 2003 chevy s10 extreme - it's been a great car but it has recently started making noises when it turns over. It is hard sound to describe its somewhere between a screech and metal on metal noise. Any ideas - is it a starter problem, an alternator problem, or other.

Hi there,

If the noise is only evident while cranking, it is a good chance that the starter motor has a problem, If you remove it also check the teeth on the ring gear (where the starter engages) as often a grinding noise from the starter is a problem with the Bendix and the teeth on the ring gear, if the teeth are badly damaged, a new ring gear ?drive plate will have to be installed.
