My 2001 S10, 189,000 miles, suddenly dropped from 18 mpg to about 9 mpg. Also when the engine is off I can hear noise like a small motor running. I think the sound is the fuel sending unit. This was replaced at about 90,000 miles.

I've already replaced the clutch, throwout bearing, gear shift, rear main seal, radiator, rear end gasket and the front hubs 3 times.

What could cause the gas mileage to suddenly drop?

Ok, so your vehicle runs fine? your concern is the Milage right?

Is you check engine light on? If so pull codes and post here. Autozone will do it for free.

Usually if you vehicle is running fine and all you notice it you milage has dropped it most likely is an O2 Sensor.
