I have a 4 cyl. manual trans. 99 chevy s10. when i start it up there's a terrible rattle coming from the catalytic converter, which i will be fixing soon. My thermostat cool. i begin driving and my thermostat doesnt budge. I drive for a few miles, low city speeds, come to a stop at a light or stop sign and my thermostat spikes to the red and goes back down. sometimes it spikes a few times. when i get to my destination, smoke or steam is pouring from under the hood, some even into the cabin. The smoke smells like burning coolant. What could it be and how do i fix it?

the rattle is probably something broken in the converter. The other may be your thermostat. You'll need to replace that as you can do more damage to the engine if you keep doing this. It probably is burning coolant that you are smelling and find out where the steam is coming from. You can have your system pressure checked to check for leaks.....
