1994 Chevy S-10 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

This weekend, I replaced my exhaust from having only a muffler and pipes being so short, that the exhaust went out of middle of the passenger side (about where the box starts). I expanded the pipe size from the stock piece (right after the exhaust manifold) to 2 1/2 (which I painted to avoid rust) and installed a 2 1/4 new catco universal catalytic converter,45 inches of pipe to connect them, a Raptor 2 1/4 universal muffler and finished with a 2 1/2 inch tail pipe. I drove about 40-50 miles and checked it - the cat was red hot. The next day, I drove 45 miles and I saw a puff of smoke from under the vehicle. The cat was still glowing, but more faint. Now I still see a puff of smoke occasionally, but the cat does not glow. Do new cats need to burn off some factory chemicals or something similar? Or is there another problem, perhaps the paint burning?
