Engine Performance problem
1987 Chevy S-10 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

1987 Chevy Blazer Vortec 4.3 engine.

Replaced: distributor cap, plugs, plug wires, coil.

Runs rough when in gear, but idles fairly smoothly and revs well with tranny in park. Sometimes blows a bit of black smoke. I can smell unburned fuel heavily in the exhaust. Is this a pickup coil issue?

Why don't you test the distributor pick-up coil resistances and for short to ground if okay do below

Black smoke -Probable causes of an engine running rich are as follows:

1.Fuel pressure not within specs. Can be cause by restricted fuel return line or defective fuel pressure regulator.
2.Defective Oxygen Sensors.
3.Leaking injectors.
4.Coolant temperature sensor out of calibration.
5.Restricted air intake system.
