My daughter has a 2000 Chevrolet Prizm that has a check engine light that stays on. She took it to a mechanic for testing and was told that it was the fuel tank vent valve. However, they said that the part was not available anymore and she would need to get one from a junk yard. How hard is it to find this part and is it difficult to repair?

its fairly simple to replace the valve, just a 30 minute job. the hard part will definitely be finding a replacement. i searched ebay and had no luch there but you may have luch at your local salvage yards. most likely if they have a prizm with a fuel tank at all then they will probably have the vent valve. goodluck on your search.
