Power window motor and regulator repair question

I have a 2000 chevy impala 3.4 V6. Recently my driver side power window stopped working properly. It will go down, but won't go back up. Sometimes if I play with the switch I can get it to go up some but never all the way. Other times if I power it down I can't get it to go back up at all. Took it to repair shop for diagnosis, was told that both the motor and regulator would need replaced being that one cannot work without the other. Is this true. Can you help. Thanks.

All the window motors i've seen can be removed from the regulator. The only way I would see the regulator need replacing, is if it's bent to where it causes the window to bind when rolling up. If not then replacing just the motor should do the trick.
