I have a 2000 Chevy Metro with 123K mi. It smokes one big puff of smoke at start up. It does not use oil and does not smoke at any other time. Runs good. What is causing the big puff of smoke at start up.

White smoke is water burning somewhere. It could be moisture collecting over night in the exhaust or even the intake. This could cause rust in the area that the water collects. It could be coolant getting into the cylinders, but this would get worse fast and cause constant smoke along with poor performance.
