Engine Mechanical problem
1979 Other Chevrolet Models V8

I just rebuilt a 305 ingine in my 1979 inboard/outboard boat. I know this is not a boat website but my engine is the same as a vehichle. I have fuel pressure in the line and my carb smell of gas so I'm pretty sure my cylenders are getting fuel. I do have spark from my distrbuter cap so I'm pretty sure I have spark. I rearanged my distributed several times and at one point it did try to fire, but with further tinkering I lost the sweet spot and now it just wines. I'm wondering if my firing order could be off or might I have to rebuild my carberator.

Put engine no.1 piston on compression stroke/TDC line the crankpulley to 0/TDC mark-make sure the ignition rotor is pointing to the no.1 cap tower-loosen the distributor hold down clamp, have helper crank engine over while you turn the distributor to find the sweet spot for it to fire up. Once it fires up tighten the hold down clamp, now check the ignition timing and adjust it to specs. If the idle is high adjust the curb idle speed screw to specs
