2003 Chevy Monte Carlo check engine light is on

I started my monte up one morning and the check engine light came on and while I was driving the engine had trouble picking up or accelerating even though I was almost pressing down fully on the gas. I made sure I gave it time to warm up before I drove it so it cant have anything to do with running cold. And when I was coming to a stop the engine was shaking and it was causing the brake pedal to vibrate. I'm not sure if this is a problem with my engine or the exhaust. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Check engine light on

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.
