i've notice in the past two days of REALLY cold weather that when i first shift into a gear for the first time in the morning that my transmission slips for a few seconds and then works perfectly fine for the rest of the day. how big of a problem is this and is there something i can do to fix it if needed.

I would first have the transmission fluid flushed and the filter changed. If it still happens after that, you are probably due for an overhaul.

i would NEVER flush a transmission unless the regularly scheduled maintence has been followed. a transmission flush will do more harm than good if it hasn't been done on a regular basic

Flushing a transmission is very near to impossible. A transmission is made up of a whole bunch of channels through which the transmission fluid is pressurized. The pressurization of these channels is controlled by gaskets. The gaskets are never all open at the same time, making it quite hard to flush the transmission.

Also to flush something there must be a point at which the fluid drains; a transmission doesn't have a point for the fluid to drain making it rather hard to do. Attempting to flush a transmission may ruin it.
