My car is making a knocking noise. It's loud when idling but it gets quieter as I accelerate. The other day I was driving and it just died on me. Now it wont start over. It starts over once in a while and backfires a couple times and then dies. My brother said that it may be the timing chain? Do you have any ideas what it may be?

If timing chain broke, engine would not rotate, since chain would be jammed against crank.

Chain could be loose, affecting timing.

If oil level is full, try measuring the oil pressure wth a mechanical gauge.
